As Canadians, most of us are deficient in Vitamin D. This important little Vitamin has many incredible benefits including:
- Contributing to bone health - Mental wellness management including anxiety and depression - Enhances the immune system - Improves cardiovascular health - Promotes absorption of calcium - Can help lower blood pressure
How much should we be getting?
Newborn babies and children should be supplementing with about 400 IU - 800 IU per day. RDA for adults is currently 1000 IU per day.
Vitamin D is a fat soluble vitamin meaning that it does get stored in your body with a potential of getting too much so be sure to talk to your doctor before supplementing with Vitamin D to see if it's right for you and your family.
Food sources of Vitamin D
- Fatty fish like salmon and tuna - Sardines - Fortified milk, oatmeal and cereals - Dairy products - Egg Yolks - Red Meat and Liver - Mushrooms
